In 1993 COCAITH applied to the Department of Family Services and Aboriginal Affairs, through the Domestic Violence Initiative Program, for recurrent funding to establish a Domestic Violence Resource Service in Townsville to service both Townsville and the Northern region.

Funding for the service was approved in 1994, and the North Queensland Domestic Violence Resource Service came into being and began formal operations in June of that year. In 2003 the NQDVRS took on an extra office in Mount Isa.

Aim of the Service

Our aim is to conduct a service in the North Queensland region which provides direct support services, community education, training for service providers and co-ordination of domestic and family violence responses, that actively promotes and enhances the safety of those involved in domestic and family violence.

Our Organisation

The NQDVRS currently employs thirteen permanent workers including the Co-ordinator and the Administrator and three at the Mount Isa office. We also employ casual staff as needed, and enjoy the placement of students, mainly from the James Cook University, but also from overseas and TAFE. We provide a variety of programs to support those who have suffered from the effects of Domestic and Family Violence.  Details of Programs.

We work closely with other women's services in Townsville i.e. The Women's Centre (North Queensland Combined Women's Services) and Sera's Women's Shelter.
